Urban Digital Twins in Korea. Experiences by Gaia3D (Sanghee Shin)

A digital twin is a virtual replica of real-world models, processes, and phenomena. Digital twins are mainly used in manufacturing, health care, and urban management. In this talk, the speaker will share his company’s experiences in implementing urban digital twins in Korea. Digital twins are a prominent topic in Korea, with significant investment from the Korean government in the development and implementation of digital twin systems. He will present several real-world examples of digital twins, focusing on the technological aspects. Also, he will discuss the challenges and limitations of digital twins.

Mr. Sanghee Shin is the founder and CEO of Gaia3D (www.gaia3d.com), an open-source geospatial company in Korea. He studied environmental GIS at the Seoul National University and business administration at the KAIST(Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). He has been involved in various open-source activities around the world for more than 20 years. He organized the International FOSS4G 2015 Seoul conference as the chairperson and served as a board member of OSGeo (Open Source Geospatial) Foundation for 2 years. He is an active promoter of open source, open standard, and open data. He is now leading the mago3D project, an open source-based digital twin platform that can manage and visualize various kinds of spatial data, simulation, and modeling results. His major interests include open source, GeoBIM, Digital Twin, and Smart City.
